EnduRAI Partners Meet in San Sebastián for the General Assembly

The EnduRAI team held the General Assembly in San Sebastián, Spain, at Tecnalia. Participants came from the project’s nine partner organisations. They are from various disciplines (sensors, AI, design, social science, and manufacturing). For one day, they met up for the same purpose: to see the work first-hand at Gosan, to see how the project was progressing, and to plan the next steps.
Morning: A Visit to Gosan
The day started with a visit to Gosan, one of the project’s pilot sites. The team saw the pulley production line in action and gained a better understanding of the actual environment they will have to work in (noise, speed, and the task’s physical requirements). It was a good start to the day, but it also reminded them of the project’s purpose: assisting those who do this work daily.
Afternoon: Sharing Progress
The meeting kicked off with a welcome from the project coordinator, University of Liverpool and the Tecnalia team. Then each team presented their progress and next steps.
Each partner added their grain of sand: the team in charge of project coordination discussed how the project is running and what they plan to do in the coming year. The co-design team shared their experience of talking to workers and visiting shop floors. The sensor team explained next steps on the wearable device and how well it performs in real work environments. The gesture recognition team reported on their data and models (these are the tools that enable the system to understand hand gestures). And the AI team described how they use various kinds of data to create tools that assist workers. Then the interface team shared what they have worked on and the next steps: screens and feedback tools, which are for individual or team use. And last, but not least, the communication team explained how the project is progressing and presented the work done and future plans.
Everyone had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss after each update.
What’s Next
The EnduRAI team will take the project one step further from San Sebastián. Now all are better informed about the implications of their work for the rest of the project, and for the parties they are intended to benefit: workers on the shop floor.
